After the performance, join Ballet Kelowna’s CEO and Artistic Director Simone Orlando for a post-show talkback. She will be joined by dancers from the company to give you insight into the performance and answer questions from the audience.

The program opens with Cuatro Estaciones (2019), an evocative ensemble piece by Ballet Kelowna’s visionary Artistic Director Simone Orlando, set to virtuoso composer Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. Orlando’s choreography infuses ballet’s contemporary lines with the intricate, expressive elements of Argentine Tango and features the full company performing fiery steps in stunning group formations and seductive duets.

Next, National Ballet of Canada Choreographic Associate Guillaume Côté brings strength and fragility to a fascinating interpretation of the beloved Bolero by Maurice Ravel, one of music’s most famous and identifiable melodies. A “riveting tour de force” (Dance Magazine), Bolero (2012) features breath-taking lifts and virtuosic choreography.

Rounding out the program, audiences will be treated to Ballet Kelowna commissioned MAMBO (2018) by Alysa Pires. The work gained worldwide acclaim after performances at Beijing’s China International Performing Arts Expo and Toronto’s Fall For Dance North Festival in 2018. Pires’ “crowd-pleasing MAMBO” (The Globe and Mail), is a colourful joie de vivre set to a vibrant soundtrack of Latin, swing, and jazz standards by musical legends such as Dean Martin, Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney, Sarah Vaughn, and more.

Ballet Kelowna delivers compelling and inspiring performances to regional, national, and international audiences. The Company presents numerous styles of dance from Canada’s finest emerging and established choreographers, and embraces the precision and athleticism of ballet technique to create original new works that captivate and engage today’s diverse audiences. Serving as the only professional dance company in B.C.’s Interior, Ballet Kelowna is committed to its role as a leader in the region through encouraging, promoting, and developing Canadian dancers and choreographers.

What are Relaxed Performances?

Sometimes referred to as sensory-friendly experiences, Relaxed Performances give the opportunity for those with various sensitivities towards sensory stimuli to experience and enjoy live theatre.

These performances will be designed in a way to be more comfortable for audience members who may experience anxiety or are not comfortable with some aspects of a traditional theatre setting. This can include people on the Autism Spectrum and their families; those with sensory and communicative disorders or learning disabilities; people with Tourette’s syndrome; someone who might need to move often due to chronic pain or to use the facilities; or even parents with toddlers.
