July 8, 2022 (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) – Confederation Centre of the Arts is honoured to announce that Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, has granted viceregal patronage to the organization.

Viceregal patronage is granted to national organizations whose objectives align with the role and responsibilities of the Governor General. Building on the viceregal tradition, support through patronage is aimed at recognizing special contributions to society, bringing attention to worthy causes, and showcasing excellence.

“We are thrilled Her Excellency has granted patronage to Confederation Centre of the Arts,” says CEO Steve Bellamy. “The Governor General has many priorities, such as reconciliation, diversity and inclusion, and youth and education, which are well-aligned with Centre priorities in all programs and activities. We are grateful for her support as we continue to offer inspiring artistic and educational experiences.”

Confederation Centre of the Arts was proud to present the Symons Medal to Her Excellency in 2009 for her work on Arctic and Indigenous issues and for her efforts in advocating for Inuit rights, youth, education, and culture.

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon was sworn in on July 26, 2021, as Canada’s first Indigenous governor general. She is the 30th governor general since Confederation.

What are Relaxed Performances?

Sometimes referred to as sensory-friendly experiences, Relaxed Performances give the opportunity for those with various sensitivities towards sensory stimuli to experience and enjoy live theatre.

These performances will be designed in a way to be more comfortable for audience members who may experience anxiety or are not comfortable with some aspects of a traditional theatre setting. This can include people on the Autism Spectrum and their families; those with sensory and communicative disorders or learning disabilities; people with Tourette’s syndrome; someone who might need to move often due to chronic pain or to use the facilities; or even parents with toddlers.
