March Art Lotto Artist Announced

– Lottery supports arts education and Island artists –

March 1, 2022 – Island residents have the unique opportunity to win a specially curated piece through an exclusive art lottery.

The Friends of Confederation Centre of the Arts are hosting Art Lotto, a fundraiser to support arts education programs at the Centre as well as Island artists. Each month a unique piece from an Island artist will be raffled off via a limited number of $20 tickets. The artists and pieces will be revealed on the first of the month, and tickets will be available immediately.

Art Lotto kicked off in January with the quillwork piece Na’ku’Set by Melissa Peter-Paul.

March’s featured piece is Thistle (1/7) by Andrew Cairns, a painter and writer based in Montague, P.E.I. He produces hard-edged graphic paintings that explore the relationship between colour and pattern. His large-scale, geometric pieces are created by using tape on canvasses while painting. He creates patterned, figure-ground relationships that produce a strong optical effect while maintaining the object quality of each piece; aiming for what he calls a stable, rather than abrasive, relationship between contrasting colours. Cairns studied at NSCAD University and King’s College in Halifax, and his work has been presented in Art in the Open, afterimage, and group and solo exhibitions in Halifax and Charlottetown.

Lottery tickets for this month are on sale March 1 – 31, or while supplies last. Future draws will open on the first of the month (i.e., April 1). There are 100 tickets available each month. Tickets can be purchased online, via phone at 1-800-565-0278, or in person at the Centre’s box office while supplies last.

What are Relaxed Performances?

Sometimes referred to as sensory-friendly experiences, Relaxed Performances give the opportunity for those with various sensitivities towards sensory stimuli to experience and enjoy live theatre.

These performances will be designed in a way to be more comfortable for audience members who may experience anxiety or are not comfortable with some aspects of a traditional theatre setting. This can include people on the Autism Spectrum and their families; those with sensory and communicative disorders or learning disabilities; people with Tourette’s syndrome; someone who might need to move often due to chronic pain or to use the facilities; or even parents with toddlers.
