While essential conservation work is underway at Province House National Historic Site, the Confederation Centre of the Arts is pleased to host “The Story of Confederation” exhibit.
Located in the Upper Foyer, the space has been decorated to look much like the historic Confederation Chamber from Province House, which was the setting of the meetings of the Charlottetown Conference in 1864. Visitors can watch the Parks Canada film, “A Building of Destiny”, that talks about those events and related themes, including the First Nations context at the time of Confederation and the role of women in Victorian society. In addition to the film, visitors can view a stunning Mi’kmaw coat and original artifacts from the Confederation Chamber.
Designated as a national historic site for its role in the Charlottetown Conference, neoclassical architecture, and as the home of the PEI Legislative Assembly, Province House is a building that holds many stories. New exhibits currently in development will explore these stories and will feature broader narratives and voices not previously presented. The site will reopen to the public in 2025.
