The King and I Present: Hockey Bar

Graeme Patterson, Ten-Point Game, detail, 2008, installation with video, dimensions variable
The exhibition is envisioned as a contemporary art experience where two of Canada’s favorite pastimes meet: beer and hockey. Inspired by kitschy sports bars and basement rumpus rooms, the installation emulates a classic pub style atmosphere within the Entrance Gallery at CCAG, complete with seating areas, art on the walls, and a TV or two with the game on.

The King and I: Hockey Bar is where familiar elements of daily culture (beer and hockey) collide with current art practices. Inspired by sports bars and basement rumpus rooms, this installation emulates the atmosphere of a public house.

The King (Eleanor King) and I (Stefan Hancherow) are the curators, the artists, and the bartenders in this experience. It’s one installation, but it’s made up of works by Canadian contemporary artists (with the exception of Andy Warhol), memorabilia borrowed from local hockey enthusiasts and archives, and the trappings of a functioning bar. Most importantly, it’s made up of those who populate the gallery when we are open for business, though the “business” is not for profit. The King and I’s primary mandate is to foster the discussion which happens when people come together and exist in common.

What are Relaxed Performances?

Sometimes referred to as sensory-friendly experiences, Relaxed Performances give the opportunity for those with various sensitivities towards sensory stimuli to experience and enjoy live theatre.

These performances will be designed in a way to be more comfortable for audience members who may experience anxiety or are not comfortable with some aspects of a traditional theatre setting. This can include people on the Autism Spectrum and their families; those with sensory and communicative disorders or learning disabilities; people with Tourette’s syndrome; someone who might need to move often due to chronic pain or to use the facilities; or even parents with toddlers.
