Sandi Hartling: Things We Can Agree On and Other Works of Fiction
Self Portrait at Distances, 2015
PEI-based conceptual artist's latest body of work explores perceptions of truth and reality.
These works by Charlottetown-based artist Sandi Hartling, all produced in the last year, explore perception and the passage of time. Employing a variety of mediums, Hartling’s work is characterized both by a dry wit and an interest in combining paradox and perceptual ambiguity with an extremely economical, direct mode of expression. Despite the frequent appearance of the artist’s own image and even biography in her work, she treats herself as impersonally as possible, almost as an object of disinterested study. Ultimately her concern is with the rhetoric of the image: what truths we can learn from it, what truths it conceals from us, and how it operates as a site for the determination of (or manipulation of) the distinction between fact and fiction.

What are Relaxed Performances?
Sometimes referred to as sensory-friendly experiences, Relaxed Performances give the opportunity for those with various sensitivities towards sensory stimuli to experience and enjoy live theatre.
These performances will be designed in a way to be more comfortable for audience members who may experience anxiety or are not comfortable with some aspects of a traditional theatre setting. This can include people on the Autism Spectrum and their families; those with sensory and communicative disorders or learning disabilities; people with Tourette’s syndrome; someone who might need to move often due to chronic pain or to use the facilities; or even parents with toddlers.
