P.E.I.’s John Dohe is a tattoo artist and a painter who cites Robert Harris and cartoonists equally as his inspirations. Dohe explores the human figure in narrative pictures that combine old master and comic-book techniques in a new exhibit at Confederation Centre Art Gallery.

Originally from the Murray River area, Dohe began learning comic book inking and drawing at age 10 from Pete Murphy in Charlottetown. In his late teens he started hanging out with tattoo artists, and he’s now one of P.E.I.’s best-known professional tattoo artists.
Dohe is also a painter whose style is unrelated to his tattoos, a style reminiscent both of old master academic work (his favourite painters include Robert Harris and William Bouguereau) and graphic novel illustration. He stands out as an accomplished young emerging artist who is not art school trained but mostly self-taught. He cites the 19th century floor at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as a major inspiration.

He started drawing and painting extensively six years ago and after some time in Montreal had his first show at the Baba’s Art Wall in Charlottetown in 2009.

The exhibition is curated by Pan Wendt and is part of the Confederation Centre Art Gallery’s Emerging Artists Series supported by the RBC Foundation.

What are Relaxed Performances?

Sometimes referred to as sensory-friendly experiences, Relaxed Performances give the opportunity for those with various sensitivities towards sensory stimuli to experience and enjoy live theatre.

These performances will be designed in a way to be more comfortable for audience members who may experience anxiety or are not comfortable with some aspects of a traditional theatre setting. This can include people on the Autism Spectrum and their families; those with sensory and communicative disorders or learning disabilities; people with Tourette’s syndrome; someone who might need to move often due to chronic pain or to use the facilities; or even parents with toddlers.
