Performing and Visual Arts Camps On Deck this March Break

This month, Confederation Centre of the Arts is hosting a variety of March Break camps for kids, ranging from those six-years old to 17.

Charlotte Gowdy

The camps run March 15-19 and are broken up into Performing Arts camps for Junior and Intermediate levels; an Intensive for teens; as well as Visual Arts Camps.

The instructors for all three levels of performing arts camps include musical theatre veterans Colton Curtis, Charlotte Gowdy, and Cameron MacDuffee, who carry experience working with Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival, The Charlottetown Festival, the Watermark , and many more North American theatres. All  performing arts camps culminate in a final presentation on March 19 at The Mack, with parents invited to attend.

  • The ‘Junior Musical Theatre‘ camps are for children ages 7-9 while ‘Intermediate Musical Theatre‘ are for those age 10-12. Both camps help children discover the magic of life under the lights! These camps also take place at The Mack, and include music, dance, and drama. They are equally fitting for beginners as well as those with experience.
  • The ‘Musical Theatre Intensive‘ is for those age 13-17 who have some previous training. Participants will study voice, acting, and styles of dance associated with the world of musicals. The Intensive offers a creative learning environment under the guidance of three experienced industry professionals. All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion at the conclusion of the program.
  • On the Visual Arts side, the Centre’s fully-equipped Schurman Family Studio is the ideal place for kids to be immersed creativity and creation. Presented from March 15-19, these fun-filled classes are for kids ages 6-12, and explore drawing, painting, sculpture and more! Trained visual arts educators focus the sessions on creative thinking, visual literacy, art process, and fun!

What are Relaxed Performances?

Sometimes referred to as sensory-friendly experiences, Relaxed Performances give the opportunity for those with various sensitivities towards sensory stimuli to experience and enjoy live theatre.

These performances will be designed in a way to be more comfortable for audience members who may experience anxiety or are not comfortable with some aspects of a traditional theatre setting. This can include people on the Autism Spectrum and their families; those with sensory and communicative disorders or learning disabilities; people with Tourette’s syndrome; someone who might need to move often due to chronic pain or to use the facilities; or even parents with toddlers.
