Film screening: The Journals of Knud Rasmussen (2006)

Date: Thursday –  March 21

Time: 7pm

A free screening of the film The Journals of Knud Rasmussen (2006) will take place at Confederation Centre Art Gallery on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m.

The Canadian-Danish film directed by Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn highlights the pressures on traditional Inuit shamanistic beliefs as documented by anthropologist Knud Rasmussen during his travels across the Canadian Arctic in the 1920s.

Set primarily in and around Igloolik in 1922, the film depicts the encounter between a group of Inuit, led by one of the last shamans of the Canadian Inuit, and three Danish ethnographers during Rasmussen’s Great Sled Journey of 1922. The film is shot from the perspective of the Inuit, showing their traditional beliefs and lifestyle. The shaman and his entourage must ultimately decide whether to join the ranks of another group of Inuit who have converted to Christianity.

Produced by Isuma, Canada’s first Inuit-owned production company, the film received nominations for a Genie Award and the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award. It was included on the Toronto International Film Festival’s annual year-end Canada’s Top Ten list for 2006.

A conversation and questions will take place after the screening. The film is a great companion to the exhibition Arctic Visions, Arctic Life – on view until April 7 at Confederation Centre Art Gallery.

What are Relaxed Performances?

Sometimes referred to as sensory-friendly experiences, Relaxed Performances give the opportunity for those with various sensitivities towards sensory stimuli to experience and enjoy live theatre.

These performances will be designed in a way to be more comfortable for audience members who may experience anxiety or are not comfortable with some aspects of a traditional theatre setting. This can include people on the Autism Spectrum and their families; those with sensory and communicative disorders or learning disabilities; people with Tourette’s syndrome; someone who might need to move often due to chronic pain or to use the facilities; or even parents with toddlers.
