The Montagues and Capulets are dancing for their lives
On November 6 at Confederation Centre of the Arts, experience Juliet & Romeo, an original dance piece from Calgary dance company, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (DJD). Inspired by the classic tale of star-crossed lovers, this high-energy production breathes new life into the tale, featuring live jazz music and a company of professional jazz dancers.
“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo,” says the Prince in Act 5, Scene 3 of Shakespeare’s most famous work. Set in Verona, this interpretation picks up with Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague falling in love at first sight. The relationship is doomed as the families are sworn enemies.
The original work is more than 420 years old and still shakes audiences. “To me, Juliet is the most interesting character in the story,” says Artistic Director, Kimberley Cooper, which is why she switched the order of their names for the title of this high energy production. “I also wanted you to know that it wouldn’t be traditional, although we do follow large components of the story.”
Cooper adds that the production will be recognizable, but reimagined. “I find this story to be so seductive, and because it is so well known that gave us permission to dive into and invent different ideas in or about the story. My hope is that the audience will find delight in the twists and turns we took with this passionate and tragic tale.”
Established in 1984, DJD has carved a niche for itself as one of Canada’s most unique dance companies, fostering a love for the traditional values of jazz dance and putting Calgary on the ma as a global destination for aspiring jazz dancers.
