Art Gallery Class Tours for Schools
The Art Gallery as a Teaching Resource
Choose a Tour that is right for you and your students!
*Tours are led by experienced visual arts educators who utilize a variety of engaging and effective teaching strategies to connect students to art, and art to your classroom.
*Tours must be booked two weeks in advance.
*Tours are available Tuesdays through Fridays, in English and French
*Kindergarten to university students are welcome.
*There is no charge for teachers and chaperones or students with financial needs.
Gallery Tour – $2.00 per student
The one-hour guided tour of the Gallery is our most popular tour! With seven gallery spaces and exhibitions changing every three to four months, there is always lots to explore each semester. As well as art curriculum, many other topics are discussed such as social studies, economics and history. Teachers are welcome to inquire about specific curriculum outcomes related to your student’s current studies.
Maximum number of students is 50
Studio Workshop– $5.00 per student
A studio workshop includes a 15-minute introduction to one of our Gallery exhibitions followed by a 45-minute art activity in the Schurman Family Studio related to the exhibition. The workshop activities offered may include drawing, painting, printmaking, bookmaking, or 3-D construction. Teachers can request an art activity of their choice.
Maximum number of students is 25
Combined Tour and Workshop– $6.00 per student
This two-hour visit combines the tours described above, with one hour spent in the Gallery and one hour in the studio. If you have more than two classes it is recommended that you combine your Art Gallery visit with our Back Stage tour, or perhaps with another tour offered in Charlottetown.

Unguided Tour – by donation only
Feel free to bring your students to the Art Gallery anytime we’re open! Norma Jean MacLean: Accumulated, Positioned, Reflected
January 13-April 28
Known primarily as a painter of the bleak winter landscapes of western P.E.I., Norma Jean MacLean has expanded her practice to include sculpture and large-scale abstract canvases. Supported by the RBC Emerging Artists Program. Curated by Pan Wendt.
Curriculum targets: line, shape and form, color, value, painting, landscape, sculpture.
Wish You Were Here: W.S. Louson’s Picture Postcards of Prince Edward Island
January 20-April 21
A gifted amateur photographer from Charlottetown, William Steele Louson, had many of his picturesque views of Island landscapes reproduced (and credited) on postcards in the early 20th century when the public interest in buying and selling postcards was a new mania. He was employed as a sales agent and travelled the Island extensively which enabled his photography of the rural landscapes throughout the Island.
Curated by Harry Holman.
Curriculum targets: Canadian history, social and cultural contexts, landscape, photography.
Erik Edson: Other Stories
February 24-May 5
An exhibition selected from over a decade of work by Sackville, N.B.-based artist Erik Edson, known for his playful transformations of found imagery and printed matter into large-scale installations. Organized with the Owens Art Gallery, Mount Allison University and curated by Pan Wendt.
Curriculum targets: line, space, pattern, printmaking, texture, shape and form, mixed media.
Arts Discovery Days
ARTS discovery days is a project of Confederation Centre of the Arts in partnership with the PEI Department of Education, Early Childhood Development and Culture. During Arts Discovery Days, students participate in hands-on sessions in movement, drama, and visual arts, connecting to fourth and eighth grade social studies curriculum for English programs. We are very pleased to once again be offering the Grade 4 program to students following the French language curriculum, and extend our thanks to Canadian Parents for French for helping us to achieve this goal.
The dates for the delivery of the program are as follows:
Grade 8 program: November 16 and 30, December 5, 2017
Grade 4 English program: February 21,26 and 28, March 7 and 12, 2018
Grade 4 French program: April 18 and 19, 2018

The Story of Confederation
Confederation Chamber Replica Tours
$2 per student/Maximum students 25
This one-hour visit begins with “A Building of Destiny” (also available in French), an easy-to-understand 20-minute film introducing students to Province House and the 1864 Charlottetown Conference. Your guide will put Confederation in physical context by interpreting our Confederation Chamber replica, featuring original artifacts, as well as perfect reproductions of the grand table and twenty-six chairs from which the Fathers debated the beginnings of a nation. The visit will end with an age-appropriate class activity.
Tours available Monday through Saturday (Must be pre-booked)
Suitable for students in Grade 4 through to university. Curriculum targets ‘ Canadian identity, history, Confederation, political science, Canada 150, Charlottetown/Island history.
